"curly brackets" or "braces"

There are four main types of brackets:

  • round brackets or parentheses: ( )
  • square brackets or box brackets: [ ]
  • curly brackets or braces: { }
  • angle brackets or chevrons: < > or ⟨ ⟩

Oh. Curly brackets. I guess I was a little bit wrong about them being called "fancy parentheses". But here's what I want to know: when is it appropriate to use the different kinds of brackets and parentheses?

When there's a need for a clause (some other idea [maybe something not that relevant {or maybe it's just not suited to a footnote} to the main] that must needs be inserted) you can look to parenthetics.

Yes, but when can I use the curly ones and when should I use the square ones? When are chevrons the best choice?
